Hapeh' Shamanic Snuff
Rapeh' or Hapeh’Medicines are both incredibly powerful medicines that come to us from the Amazonians; Peru, Mexico, and Columbia are the primary places where the tribal practice and use of this medicine have its origins.
This Medicine is often called Rape’ (pronounced Rah - Pey) or Hapeh’ (Pronounced Ha- pay).
Many people work with this medicine in the morning and blow the powder snuff blown up the nose for a grounding, stimulating, and energetic cleansing on the mind, body, and spirit. It can even have stimulating and sometimes psychoactive effects for the recipient and can be profound for spiritual relief and expansion.
Hapeh’, Rapeh’, Shamanic Snuff…
It is a beautiful time that we live in. The availability of Plant Medicines is becoming more and more available and allowing for new substances to reach our western culture. Only, they aren’t new. Just new to us.
Rapeh' or Hapeh’Medicines are both incredibly powerful medicines that come to us from the Amazonians; Peru, Mexico, and Columbia are the primary places where the tribal practice and use of this medicine have its origins. Historically speaking there is evidence that shamanic snuff first belonged to the ancient Incas in the Andean mountains.
This Medicine is often called Rape’ (pronounced Rah - Pey) or Hapeh’ (Pronounced Ha- pay). Rapeh’ is generally found in the Peruvian origins and is a simple mixture that is typically made with Mapahcho Nicotiana Rustica, and ceremonial ash that comes from a sacred fire. Hapeh’ tends to be made with either Mapahcho Nicotiana Rustica, or pure Tobacco leaf Nicotiana Tabacum, ceremonial ash, and oftentimes, other herbs or plant medicine are added for specific healing qualities. The recipes are often kept secret by the Shaman and are made in a ceremonial process with prayer and offerings.
The medicine is taken with either a self-applicator called a Kuripe, a V-shaped applicator that allows blowing the medicine up your own nose. This allows for one to work with the medicine on a personal basis in personal practice. Developing a personal practice is a powerful and beautiful way to work with this medicine. Being taught and blessed by an initiated medicine personnel or shaman who carries this medicine is ideally the best and most conscious way to begin a practice and relationship with the medicine… Many people work with this medicine in the morning and blow the powder snuff blown up the nose for a grounding, stimulating, and energetic cleansing on the mind, body, and spirit. It can even have stimulating and sometimes psychoactive effects for the recipient and can be profound for spiritual relief and expansion.
The other way to work with this medicine and the most profound way is to receive the medicine from an initiated medicine person or shaman in a ceremonial setting. Some people don’t think that there is a difference until they are served by an initiated medicine person who is taught and blessed by elders to carry and offer this medicine. When it is offered in a shamanic ceremonial setting, it is served with an applicator known as a Tepi. A Tepi is traditionally a bone pipe or wooden longer stemmed pipe with two ends; one for blowing and one for receiving the shamanic snuff up the nose. The snuff powder blown up your nose by the medicine person or shaman can provide a profound healing experience. This way seems to provide the recipient with a powerful immediate experience in releasing dense, negative energy from the mind and body. Many times there are psychoactive effects that lead directly to spiritual experiences of visions, messages, clearings, and healings. This way is done with both the effects of the medicine and the energy medicine and prayer of the shaman(a) over your spirit and more.
The process starts with prayer, opening up sacred space, talking to the medicine, and setting your intentions or prayer request into the medicine to be received. The eyes are closed and a couple of breaths are guided and encouraged to prepare to take this medicine. The recipient is guided to focus on their intentions and stay in the place of receiving the medicine.
At the beginning of the process, as soon as the medicine is administered, it can often cause an immediate jolt with some obvious pain as the medicine hits the nasal cavity walls. The eyes may tear up and a sudden rush of pain may happen as the medicine begins to deeply enter the body. When the medicine enters your nasal cavity, it will immediately permeate your mucous membranes and begin to enter the bloodstream. The constituents attach to nicotine receptors, resulting in increased production of dopamine, acetylcholine, and epinephrine.
The process of the medicine begins and you may begin to feel the spiritual, energetic, and physical release of toxins, energies, and even emotions. Some people purge on this medicine, some people don’t. Purging happens for many reasons… Just note (don’t swallow the medicine). After some time you may feel the medicine dripping down the back of the throat. This is where you are encouraged to spit it out unless it comes up on its own through a purge. Typically at the end, a tear falls from the eyes. It is said that this is a sign of the rebirth taking place. Like any journey with medicines, it is an entire process of energetic and spiritual clearing and more importantly a relationship being built between the recipient and the powerful plant medicine. Towards the end of the process, a person may begin to feel relaxed, calm, grounded, clear, alert, present, and embodied.
Some people use this medicine recreationally, daily, and like a cigarette even. I personally encourage you to seek out Medicine persons (myself), or another initiated and experienced medicine person, for proper blessings, teaching, and even personal initiations to work with this medicine. After all, tobacco is considered a Master Plant and can have profound spiritual effects on a person’s spiritual life. There is also the tradition of respecting medicines. Learning about them and their proper use can also support your body's health and prevent them from doing harm to you.
I personally teach people how to work with hapeh’ and rapeh in a deeply committed personal practice. Teach how to connect and understand the master plant and cultivate a sacred relationship with this medicine. I initiate with spiritual blessings and coverings to work with this medicine and even offer group teachings, training, and initiations by request. Below are some pictures from learning to make Rapeh’ with my Shaman, Rex, down in Mexico…
Here you will see us finding tobacco leaves and other plant medicines, learning how to dry the leaf, cook and make the medicine from scratch. It was a long 2 days of learning this process and such a blessing to learn this hands-on with my teacher. I look forward to sharing this incredible medicine with you.
